3 Things to Remember in the Handover of Automated Systems

One important area is how your partner will help you manage the handover for the system. Turn-key shouldn’t mean toss the keys over their shoulder (although unfortunately it often does).  With a complete automated system you can’t just flip a switch.  There is a lot that needs to take place, especially in regards to your team.

The following are my thoughts on what three areas a good system integrator should help with.

Who do you need?  What type of employees will you need to run your new automated distribution center?  What should their job description be?  Will your supplier help write the job description based on your system?

As a subset, are you going to need a team from NASA or are there people that you have now that can transition to new positions? Can your partner give examples from other projects in your industry?

How many technicians, IT people, how many engineers?

When can you integrate your team?  Remember that for automated systems there is a higher learning curve so you need to get your team in as soon as possible.  The inclusion of your people in the process gives them hands-on training and behind-the-scenes knowledge.

A good idea would be to see if they will allow you to have someone present during commissioning.

What support is offered?  What kind of virtual support does your supplier offer?  Can they offer troubleshooting from a remote location?  What are the times support is offered?

What if you need people on the ground?  Do they have a team for that?  What is the average response time if you have a problem?

While moving to automation can be intimidating, a great partner can make the transition smoother.  Going with someone who has experience in your industry and can guide you through quagmires is valuable.

So what have your experiences with system turnover been?  Anything else here that could be helpful?  Please comment below.
